Jeremiah W. “Jay” Nixon included in the 29th Edition of The Best Lawyers in America©
Best Lawyers® has recognized Governor Jay Nixon in the practice areas of Commercial Litigation and Government Relations. Before joining Dowd Bennett in 2017, Jay was Attorney General for the State of Missouri from 1993-2009 and served as Governor of the State of Missouri from 2009-2017. Beyond his public service, Jay is also a nationally recognized appellate advocate. During his time as Missouri’s attorney general, Jay briefed and argued cases at all levels of state and federal courts of appeals across the country. He personally argued two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the landmark Nixon v. Shrink Missouri Government PAC, which reinstated Missouri’s campaign contribution limits. He was also three times awarded United States Supreme Court Best Brief by the National Association of Attorneys General. Jay continued his appellate advocacy upon returning to private practice. His appellate arguments have earned unanimous favorable decisions from both Missouri Court of Appeals and the Missouri Supreme Court. Jay’s long track record of appellate success is attributable to his unique understanding of legislative and executive functions and his ability to synthesize and simplify the issues before the court. This is Jay’s first Best Lawyers award, which is based on the evaluation of a lawyer’s aptitude by his or her peers in the same geographic and practice areas.
